MOVIE MINUTE: IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH
Oscar-winners Charlize Theron and Tommy Lee Jones star in the new Paul Haggis film In The Valley of Elah. It tells the story of an Iraq war veteran who goes missing on his first weekend back from the desert. His father "Hank," played by Jones, teams up with a police detective, portrayed by Theron, to try to track him down. There are a lot of scenes in this film without dialogue and Tommy Lee Jones told us it takes some time to learn to act without speaking. "Hopefully one grows... I hope our young actors are growing and I think it's part of the process of maturing as a motion picture actor to realize that it is a motion picture. We don't call them talking pictures anymore." The film also stars real Iraq war veterans Wes Chatman and Jake McLaughlin. Charlize told us that it was essential to have them in the film. "It was great having them around, it was great and amazing, amazing actors... really amazing and I know why, because I think all of this is so fresh for them, you know? And that was really what this work was about was just the truth of their lives and I think that really helped." In The Valley of Elah also stars James Franco and Josh Brolin. The movie is in theaters now.



MADONNA, BEASTIE BOYS AND MORE NOMINEES FOR ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. The nominees for the 2008 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced. This year sees the inclusion of John Mellencamp, Madonna, the Beastie Boys, Leonard Cohen, Donna Summer and more on the ballot. Five acts will be chosen for induction and will attend the annual ceremony at New York's Waldorf Astoria on March 10th, 2008.



BEYONCE GOES TO CHINA... According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beyonce is headed to China. This marks the singer's first ever live performance in China. The show is set to take place at Shanghai's Grand Stage on November 5th.



...AND NOT TO MALAYSIA. Beyonce's November 1st Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia concert has been canceled after protests by local Muslim groups and what industry sources say is her refusal to abide by the country's strict dress code for performers. According to The Hollywood Reporter,the Kuala Lumpur-based concert promoter Pineapple Concerts issued a statement announcing the cancellation. There was no reason given. It would have been Beyonce's first gig in Malaysia.



THE KILLERS RELEASE "TRANQUILIZE." Fans of The Killers won't have to wait much longer to hear some new music from the band. The first single off their upcoming B-Sides album, "Tranquilize," will hit radio on October 22nd. "Tranquilize" was recently recorded and features Lou Reed. The Killer's B-Sides album, Sawdust, comes out on November 13th.



ALICIA KEYS TALKS "NO ONE." Alicia Keys is making waves on the charts with her new single, "No One." The song is number 15 on this week's Billboard chart and has only been out for three weeks. Last time we spoke with her she filled us in on the song's meaning. "'No One' is really talking about the way that in relationships, the way that so many things are around you all the time to try to distract you. And even though people may talk and say whatever they may want to say, but then no one can get in the way of this." Keys' album, As I Am is due out November 13th.



THICKE READYS THIRD ALBUM. Robin Thicke has had a pretty successful year with his single "Lost Without U" becoming a number one hit on the charts and his album The Evolution of Robin Thicke selling over one-million-copies. Even with all the album's success, Thicke recently told us he's already into the creation of his third studio album. "I have a vault of music, and I half about half a new album that I'm excited about. Besides that I realize that I been writing songs for about fourteen year's straight. And I would really like to take a couple months off of not writing songs. I just want to take a break for a few months." Thicke was just playing some shows overseas but will be back here in the States on Saturday when he plays Atlantic City, New Jersey.



FAITH HILL THINKING ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY? Faith Hill tells People magazine that she wouldn't shun the idea of plastic surgery. Now that the country diva has hit the big 4-0, she says she knows she's not as young as she used to be. "Oh, my gosh, I have a lot of wrinkles. It's mostly laugh lines, but it is what it is," she said. But she admits that she has thought about plastic surgery. "I can't say never, but I'm kind of a naturalist."



MICHAEL JACKSON NOT MARRIED. Despite rumors that the King of Pop has tied the knot, Michael Jackson is still single. E! Online reports the singer's rep issued a firm denial Thursday in response to rumors that Jackson had swapped vows with his children's nanny, Grace Rwaramba. The stories began when the National Enquirer's Web site quoted a source supposedly close to the pair, who said, "Grace was happy to go along with it. She's always been devoted to Michael and has raised the kids since the day they were born. Michael knew she'd make a perfect stepmother." The tabloid also said that it had obtained a real estate document on which Jackson referred to himself as a "married man."



DAVE GROHL INSPIRED GIBSON GUITAR. Did Dave Grohl inspire you to play guitar? Well, he inspired Gibson Guitars so much that they are releasing a DG-335 guitar, based on his Trini Lopez signature model. It's the next release in their Inspired By series. You can pick up one of the Foo Fighter inspired guitars when they go on sale on Thursday.



JOY DIVISION WISHED THEY'D HELPED IAN CURTIS MORE. Control, the Anton Corbijn directed biopic about the life if Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, comes out next month and it has his former band members thinking. Drummer Stephen Morris spoke to U-K paper The Sun about Ian, who committed suicide in 1980, saying, "Looking back, I wish I'd helped him more. I think that all the time... But we were having such a good time, and you're very selfish when you're young." The film, which shows Curtis' battle with epilepsy, is important to the surviving members of Joy Division. Bassist Peter Hook says, "I'm glad Control shows how important Ian's role was in the band... He'd always inspire us to keep trying." Control hits select theatres on October 10th.



CHEVELLE ARE NOT AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT. Chevelle recently released a new album, but according to drummer Sam Loeffler they are always thinking about the next offering. Sam says don't be surprised if it's quite different than their previous albums. "There's a delicate balance between making something new and retaining your sound and original audience. Our style is changing all the time. And we are going to write something that is going to be considerable different and people may not like. But when that happens it happens." Chevelle's Vena Sera is out now.



MAROON 5 TO KICK OFF THEIR WORLD TOUR IN DETROIT. Maroon 5 will be kicking off their It Won't Be Soon Before Long world tour tomorrow. The band will hit 28 North American cities and is bringing The Hives along for the ride. The tour begins in Detroit, Michigan and frontman Adam Levine talked about why Detroit is the first stop. "I guess that was just the luck of the draw. I mean, I know it sounds like a terribly boring answer, again, another boring answer, it was a routing situation. Okay, I'll tell you why, because Detroit is a beautiful city that we admire and appreciate and we wanted to start our tour there because we love it so much." Levine and guitarist James Valentine say that the last time they played Detroit was when they opened up for the Rolling Stones. "(Adam Levine) That was intense to say the least. (James Valentine) They're another group of our idols and it was amazing to see. We had the opportunity to meet them all backstage. They were so gracious. We were led around by Ronnie Wood to each member's dressing room and you could sort of, you could see each member's personalities in the little areas. Keith Richard's backstage area was just a bar." It Won't Be Soon Before Long has sold over 1.2-million copies since its release.



AMY WINEHOUSE DVD ON THE WAY! Singer Amy Winehouse will be releasing a DVD before the year is out, titled I Told You I Was Trouble. NME.com reports that the release will feature a mixture of documentary and live gig material. The DVD also features interviews with Winehouse and her father, Mitch. It's set to come out in the U-K on November 5th, and according to her label,will be available Stateside on November 13th.



PUDDLE OF MUDD MAN MAKES A SPLASH AT GRACELAND. RollingStone.com is reporting that Puddle of Mudd singer Wes Scantlin is banned for life from Graceland. The singer apparently jumped into the pool on the estate last week without permission and has now been restricted from visiting the former home of Elvis Presley. And just in case you haven't heard, Puddle of Mudd's third album, Famous, comes out on October 9th.



BONO SPEAKS OUT ON THE SITUATION IN MYANMAR. U2 frontman Bono has commented on the recent violence in Myanmar. The Associated Press reports that the singer and humanitarian said, "It is extraordinary to see the Buddhist monks, isn't it? Their nonviolence may, I pray, win out over the ugliness of the situation... I slept uneasily last night, and I'm sure everyone else that watched did, too." He added, "How far are they going to have to go?" Bono hopes that everyone will show their support for the Burmese people at this time, "In Britain, (Prime Minister) Gordon Brown has shown some leadership as has (President) George Bush. Everyone should keep their fingers crossed and say your prayers for them (the protesters)." After a month of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations against Myanmar's government, officers opened fire on the protesters on Wednesday, beating and detaining large groups of Buddhist monks.



DEF LEPPARD DRUMMER HOPING TO HEAL. Along with his musical visions, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen also has visions for his Raven Drum Foundation. According to Blabbermouth.net, the charity seeks to show people how to use "the healing arts." Allen says, "The first rhythm you ever heard was your mother's heartbeat; that rhythm is in all of us - it is the rhythm of love." The drummer also described what the organization does, adding, "Raven Drum empowers individuals in crisis in the community using the power of the drum and the healing arts." Allen will be talking to fans at NASCAR's Bank of America 500 in Concord, North Carolina on October 13th with the hopes of sharing his ideas for Raven Drum with drivers. Why? Allen explained, "The importance of NASCAR is its strong affiliation with and the support of the United States Armed Forces." Ultimately, Rick's goal is to bring messages of encouragement to servicemen and to show people how to stay calm using those healing arts.



TRAVIS BARKER PRODUCING NEW PAUL WALL ALBUM. Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker will be getting behind the board on the next Paul Wall album. MTV News reports that Barker is producing Wall's upcoming record and he recently filled them in on how it's gonna sound, "Most of the Houston stuff is slow and real feel-good. This has faster tempos. Still feel-good, but it'll be different for Paul." Meanwhile, Travis told MTV Radio recently that he hopes to record a new album with his band +44 in the near future.



JASON BATEMAN IN JUNO. Juno is the new film from director Jason Reitman, who brought us 2005's Thank You For Smoking. It is described as a dark comedy about "Juno," played by Ellen Page, who becomes pregnant and makes an unusual decision regarding her unborn child. Jason Bateman also stars in the flick and he explained a bit more about it. "Michael Cera and Ellen Page have a child that they are too young to keep so, they put it up for adoption and Jennifer (Garner) and I adopt the kid or are in line to adopt the kid and it's just a great kind of comedy, drama about that." Juno also stars Allison Janney and Rainn Wilson. It will arrive in theaters in December.



WHY BATEMAN WANTED TAPE OVER HIS MOUTH. Jason Bateman spends a good amount of time in the movie The Kingdom as a captured FBI agent who is bound and gagged. The original script doesn't call for his character to be gagged, but he requested that his mouth be taped for a very good reason. "Ya know, I get bound for thirty pages and if I don't have tape on my mouth, I'm going to have to - every time the camera hits me - be complaining. Like 'Get this - blah blah! Untie me!' And who the hell wants to listen to that? If I'm not doing that, then it's unrealistic." The Kingdom also stars Jennifer Garner and Jamie Foxx and it's in theaters now.



DADDY YANKEE IN CANE. Reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee will make his TV debut tomorrow night in the second episode of the new CBS series Cane, starring Jimmy Smits. Daddy Yankee will perform his new single "Who's your daddy" at a nightclub owned by one of the shows' characters. " I just recorded the first episodes of the series Cane and I love the story the first scene is like me as Daddy Yankee then after we finish the tour we're gonna come back with my character, you know they are just developing the character for me for the series and being able to represent my people in the series is a great honor for me." Seems like not only will Yankee sing in this episode, but producers want to bring him back to the show later this season. Daddy Yankee is currently on tour through the US.



CLOONEY TO GET FOXY FOR ANIMATED FILM. George Clooney will be voicing the title character in an upcoming animated film based on the children's story Fantastic Mr. Fox. Director Wes Anderson, who has been talking to the press about his new movie, The Darjeeling Limited, also confirmed to MTV's Movies Blog that the voices of Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzmann will be appearing in the movie. Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is an adaptation of a Roald Dahl book, will be animated in stop-motion form. Anderson explained that style of animation as being like "those Christmas specials" (we're assuming he means TV movies like Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Year Without a Santa Claus). He said the animation for the film will take a couple of years to complete.



HALLE BERRY RECEIVES RACIAL DEATH THREATS OVER UNBORN CHILD. Now Magazine is reporting that Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has been forced to hire security guards after receiving several racial death threats. Halle, who is three months pregnant with her first child, is reported to have received sickening letters from an anonymous person who has threatened to maim her and her baby. One source told the magazine that one threat said the child would be "cut into hundreds of pieces." The threats are being investigated by police and the star has decided to pay for her own protection. "Halle does not normally use security," the source says, "but she has taken on a couple of guys to make sure nothing happens." The letters are believed to be part of a race hate campaign aimed at the 41-year-old actress, whose father is African-American, because she is having a child with Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.



BEN STILLER SAYS OWEN WILSON IS "DOING REALLY WELL." While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday to promote his own upcoming film, Ben Stiller was asked about Owen Wilson's progress since his reported suicide attempt in August. Stiller told Ellen, "He's doing really well." According to E! Online, he then stopped short of revealing anything too personal about the star's healing process, saying, "I sort of like to protect his privacy cause I feel like it's his own thing. But he's a really good friend of mine. He's an incredible guy and I wish him as everybody does, all the best." Wilson was expected to make a cameo in Stiller's Tropic Thunder, but pulled out in the wake of his hospitalization. Last week, we reported that Matthew McConaughey would replace Wilson. Stiller was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote The Heartbreak Kid. It opens nationwide on Friday.



NO KIDS OR MARRIAGE FOR EVA MENDES. There have been recent reports that Eva Mendes may be pregnant after she was seen coming out of a pre-natal yoga class and was showing a tiny "Hollywood" bump in her midsection. But in her recent interview with Gotham magazine, the actress said that not only does she not want children, she also doesn't believe in marriage. The We Own the Night star said, "Yeah, I totally believe in having a soul mate. I love the idea of being committed to the same person; I'm a romantic in that way. But my boyfriend and I think marriage is antiquated." Later in the interview, Mendes said that she doesn't want children and that at her age, she should already be feeling the maternal instinct saying, "I'm 32, shouldn't it have hit me by now? I'm not saying I never want kids, because who knows? I don't want to sound like an idiot, and someday, you'll be like, "Remember when I interviewed you in 2007 and now it's 2008, and you're pregnant with twins?" Her new movie, We Own the Night,starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be in theaters on Friday.



MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ HAS BEEN DELINQUENT. TMZ has obtained documents that reveal that Michelle Rodriguez has not complied with the terms of her probation for a variety of offenses, including hit and run and DUI. The Lost star has not been performing community service or following her alcohol monitoring program. Now, the Los Angeles City Attorney says if Michelle does not own up to her delinquency, she could face a maximum sentence that comes out to as much as 537 days in jail. If she does cop to it, she'd get some time off, but still face significant time behind bars.



VIVICA A. FOX PLEADS NOT GUILTY. The Associated Press reports that Vivica A. Fox pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of drunk driving on Thursday. The actress, who was arrested after being caught speeding in March, could face up to six months in jail and a one-thousand dollar fine if convicted.



NUGENT TO APPEAR IN TOBY KEITH MOVIE. According to the Youngstown, Ohio's Vindicator-Correspondent,Ted Nugent has signed on to appear in the upcoming Toby Keith movie Beer For My Horses. The film is, of course, based on Toby's hit duet with Willie Nelson. No word on who the Nuge will play, but the movie stars Toby as a man searching for his kidnapped girlfriend. It also stars actor/comic Rodney Carrington, who co-wrote the film script with Toby. It is expected to begin filming this spring.



BRITISH SCHOOL GOVERNOR SUING BRITISH GOVERNEMENT OVER DISTRIBUTING AN INCONVENIANT TRUTH. Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, which has been shown in some college and high school classrooms, got blowback earlier this year when a Washington school put a moratorium on showing the global-warming movie. But now, according to the Associated Press, a British school governor is taking an even stronger measure by suing the British government for distributing the movie to more than 35-hundred secondary schools. Paul Downes, a lawyer for Stewart Dimmock, said, "Given the serious inaccuracies in the film and the misrepresentations it contains, the film is irredeemable." The lawyer added that even though the movie has already been shown to some students, the High Court could still rule that the government had acted unlawfully and cease distributing it.
